Some people may enjoy sleeping. They may say they’d like to sleep for long periods of time. Well, I am here to tell you that is not true!
When I awoke from my slumber, I felt like I’d only taken a nap, or had a good night’s sleep. Imagine my surprise when I discovered it had indeed been a hundred years! I’d been asleep for a hundred years!
I freaked out. Like, I had a panic attack. I fell asleep in 2013… oh my, it’s 3013?? Do I look the same? Or did I age? I didn’t know!
They popped this strange piece of paper in my mouth. “Eww,” I said. “You can’t eat paper! Why are you giving me paper?”
“I think they called them ‘pills’ in your time,” she told me. “Our food now is these little edible papers. We give medicine and meals in them.”
“That’s so gross,” I groaned.
The paper worked though. It calmed me down almost instantly. “Can I look in the mirror?”
They handed me a hand mirror. I looked the same. Miraculous. I was wearing a dress I had bought at Forever 21; it had blue birds on it. It was super cute.
“We’ll have to take you shopping,” the woman said. “That dress is hideous.”
“What?!” I exclaimed. “It’s so cute!”
“No, it’s not,” she said. I then noticed her clothes. Metalic with odd shapes. Very futuristic.
Oh, yeah. I am in the future.
“What else has changed?” I bravely asked.
“Well,” the woman paused. “Everyone you’ve ever known is dead.”
This is awful. How did I fall sleep for so long? I don’t belong here.
“Don’t worry,” the woman patted my back. “We’ll get you through this.” My stomach then growled. “I’ll go get you food,” she said as she laughed. She walked over to a gray box in the wall. “What would you like?”
“A hamburger,” I said without hesitating.
“No one eats those anymore,” she told me. “But I’ll make it happen.” She punched a few buttons, and out printed a paper. She handed it to me.
“This is so messed up,” I told her but I put in my mouth. Wow… it really tasted like a hamburger! I about died. Still, I missed the texture of the burger, the pickles. What an odd way to eat!
I don’t think I’ll ever get used to this.
I want to go home.

From the Journal of Princess Briar Rose
Dear Diary,
Today, a prince woke me up with a kiss. It's romantic, right? Yeah, not so much. I mean, I guess the kiss was nice. I don't know, really, since I wasn't really awake for half of it. The prince is quite handsome, though. However, grateful as I was for him to wake me up from my eternal slumber, I thought it quite rude for a stranger to suddenly come up to a sleeping lady and kiss her while she could not do anything about it. Alas, this seemed to be the only way to break the curse, so maybe I should not be so picky.
Anyway, yes, eternal slumber. That's the big problem, really. Apparently, I have been sleeping for a hundred years. Isn't that horrible? You'd think I would have shriveled up like a prune by now. But I'm magically still beautiful, my skin is still soft, and I'm as young as I remember, if a bit dusty (guess everyone else in the castle fell asleep too? Why didn't the prince kiss any of them instead?). And well... this is really strange. I mean, obviously, the world has changed.
They have invented new transportation. These fancy things called cars - which the prince promptly took me for a spin in. It is rather nice, if a bit windy (why must the roof be taken down? It really messes up my hair). But it's also really fast. To be honest, it scared me. But I think the prince did it on purpose so I would cling to him in my fright (once again, he proves his lack of gentlemanly traits). And then he whisked me to his palace, and the whole city looked like it came out from some futuristic dream. Everything was operated by machines, they looked so sleek and all pointy sides and so cold. All glass and hardly any stone in sight. Tall buildings called skyscrapers made my head spin. And one big crazy honking truck nearly ran me over. (I would have Father punish that barbarian severely, but apparently stocks are outdated as punishment now. Such a shame)
The prince told me I needed new clothes. How offensive. My dresses are the most beautiful ones in the land, and I told him so. He said he agreed; they were the most beautiful ones in the land... a hundred years ago (Rude. Again). So he showed me what princesses today are wearing, and I'm disappointed. There's barely any big, flowy dresses anymore. No frills, no extravagant ribbons, just... simple, form-fitting ones that could barely be called actual dresses! I looked at my pretty pink ball gown in dismay at the thought of never being able to wear it again. Apparently, it would make me look out of place even in royal events these days. So sad. I tried out one of the new dresses and didn't feel like a princess at all. He said it was the best dress tailored by the most skilled palace tailors, but to me it looked like a commoners' attire.
Needless to say there will be a lot of adjustments. Sometimes I wonder if maybe he really should've just let me sleep forever after all...
I just really miss my old dresses, okay? And apparently people don't talk to birds anymore. What is THAT all about?
I shall continue writing tomorrow's adventures. Now I must figure out how to operate this strange contraception called elevator in order to reach my room. Frankly, it looks like a death trap to me.
Til tomorrow.

Dear Diary :
It was a cool night and I decided to sleep out in the back yard by the oak tree. I was somewhat concealed by bushes. It had been a strange day as the family had walked to the outside of town to visit a traveling circus. The whole town of maybe 150 people were playing games, seeing strange looking people for a nickel and even buying medicines from the traveling Medicine Man. He gave my Dad a tiny bottle and said it would let you sleep for a long time. My Dad laughed and gave it to me. I hadn't slept good since our dog died last week so I thought it might help and if not well I hoped it tasted good. I popped open the cork and drank down the black ingredients and it tasted like dirt. Pulling my blanket up to my neck I ruffled up my pillow and fell fast to sleep.
Entry 1:
Opening my eyes I noticed the grass all around me was so tall. I couldn't imagine how it had grown so high overnight! I stood up to look at our tiny log house and I saw an empty lot! The whole street was full of empty lots!! Where were my parents and brother ? Where was everyone? What had happened?
Entry 2:
I noticed I was still in my old nightgown and it was pretty shabby. I had my slippers on and so I headed down the once quiet house lined street off to try and find my family and friends.
Entry 3:
I first noticed the road as it was not dirt filled but had black stuff all over it. I touched it and found it to be hard, so I started to walk on it. As I came around the corner which would lead to our tiny town I froze. The old wooden building were gone and in their place were tall brick and glass buildings. The tiny town I remembered was gone and it was now huge and sprawled out for miles. People were everywhere.
Entry 4:
No longer were there horses or wagons but strange metal things riding on 4 wheels that had doors that opened and people got in and out of them. They were noisy and blew smoke from a tiny pipe in the back.
Entry 5:
The thing that surprised me the most were the ladies and men and what they were wearing. My Dad always wore blue jeans and a dear skinned shirt and boots. Mom wore a long plain dress and a white apron and small rabbit fir or beaver skin shoes. These ladies wore fancy SHORT dresses and skirts of all sorts of colors and they wore large hats. BUT their SHOES !! They were walking on shoes that had sticks or something like sticks holding the back of the shoe off the ground. The men had fancy britches and coats that matched, shinny black shoes and some wore funny looking hats, like an upside down bucket on their head.
Entry 6:
I walked toward a building where the smell of food was just wonderful. I looked in the window and saw lots of tables, big and small, filled with people eating. They were eating all sorts of things I have never seen in my life. The tables each had shiny metal forks, spoons and knives. Each person had a fancy cloth to set in their lap, but I don't know why. The glasses were thin, tall and filled with water. I didn't see any old copper mugs anywhere.
Entry 7:
I felt lost and I didn't know what had happened to me. I heard someone call my name "Kath"! I felt like running away as I surely would not know any of the people here. I saw a man running across the street dodging the metal thing on wheels. He was young and oddly looked familiar. "Kath??" "Is it really you ?"
Entry 8:
I tried to pull away as he grabbed my arm. "Let me go", I screamed. " "It's ok, your safe, it's me - Tom." "You aint MY Brother", I yelled. "Yes Yes I am, where did you come from?" "Where have you been?", he cried. I was so confused, hungry, thirty and shaken I collapsed into his arms.
Entry 9:
I woke up in a large bedroom. The ceiling was up so high! I was laying in a bed with a white cover over the top held up by fancy wooden sticks. The sheets were soft as rabbit fir and the blanket was thick with many colors. WHERE WAS I?
Entry 10:
The door to the bedroom opened and in walked the young man who said he was my brother Tom. Behind him came two older people. They looked like MY PARENTS only old and grey haired. They all sat down on the bed and they explained how they couldn't find me the morning after I had slept outside. They searched for days, months and years. They never gave up hope but No one could explain why I was still just 11 years old and they had grown old.
END:
I have decided whatever that traveling medicine man gave my Dad, was a sleeping potion that also made me fade into the ground around me, so no one could find me. I am learning a new way of life, going to school which I am pretty far behind right now. I found out those metal things on wheels are called cars. We don't use candles any more because we have a switch that turns lights on like magic. Momma and Dad are so happy they have me back. Tom is getting married soon, so I will have another member of our family to get to know better.
So many changes and new things to learn about, but at least I am back with my family. I have learned one thing for sure - I will never ever take a sleeping potion of any kind again.

Lavinia Rookwood
To me, it was like yesterday. I had climbed the stairs, anxious and excited and scared. It was my 16th birthday, and I was supposed to meet the lucky man who would wed me. The party would not start until the sun fell, and I was too nervous to stay in my room. There was so much going on, and I am not certain what compelled me to go upstairs. Actually, I do remember, it seemed to be the only escape form the madness. I only wanted a moment to breathe and not feel constricted by people. When I stepped into the stairwell, I noticed that it was a place in the castle I had never explored. I was always such a curious girl, and so I continued up. At the top had been an elderly lady, with an invention I had never seen before. She called it a spinning wheel, and offered to show me how to use it. "In my day, a girl could not marry until she could spin her weight in wool and have each skein be as smooth as a river pebble", she said, as I took a seat next to her. I was clumsy, which is to expected, I suppose, and I accidentally pricked my finger on the spindle. It didn't hurt, it truly felt like sleeping.
And then you came along, woke me with the gentle press of your lips against mine. Sometimes, I despise you for it. No one else survived who knows me, really know me. I've heard the tales in the streets, the story they woven about me, but already it is wrong. The fairy did not care to save anyone but me, and only to save her pride. Fairies are such fickle faithless creatures. But to let me slumber for a hundred years? Sometimes I think it would be better to have died. After all a kingdom can survive without a princess; but a princess cannot exist without a kingdom. Oh, I know what you say, I'm your princess, your kingdom is mine, but it's not the same. In my day, I had worth. I was worth a kingdom. Now I'm a pauper in silken gowns. I'm reliant on every one's charity.
But this land is beautiful, in such a strange way. I spend so much time in the library, even though the language has changed so much since I last read. But I've always had a way with languages, as you yourself has seen. It didn't take me long to learn these strange new words. So many new countries and leaders! And the foods in the marketplace! I have never seen a pineapple before. It was quite delicious. I believe the merchant said it came from a island country. The fashions are quite strange too, such wide skirts, and the lace on the sleeves. Why even the opulence of the palace is strange to me. We didn't have the riches you do.
You know, when I was a young girl, I always wanted to see the world. My father would never let me go far. I never left the castle. Knowing now what I do, I cannot blame him. As I said, I was so curious, he must have known that I couldn't resist trying it. I bet you didn't know that I knew how to fight with a blade, did you? My father and mother amused my curiosity in other ways, an indulgence of theirs. We didn't have guns then, but I've been practicing, and I can almost shoot as well as one of your guards, though I have a long way to being a master like one of those musketeers. You take so much for granted, dear sweet Louis. You do not see what I see. It is as if I'm a child again, seeing the world for the first time. It is it's own gift in a way, even if the price was so high.
I suppose you are wondering why I'm writing this. It's been almost a year since you have kissed me. You and your father gave me a year to adjust to this new world. In a few days, we would begin plans for a wedding. But I cannot marry you. Well, I could, but I will not.
I cannot pretend to be a princess anymore. I have not been one since I awoke. My kingdom, my family, my heritage, it's all gone. Even the calender I knew is gone. There is nothing familiar to me. I have been born again, as a young woman with no ties to anywhere in the world. You are a prince with everyone relying on you. You need a princess who can understand this world, and you do not have the time to wait for me. Marry the Antoinette girl, she will be much more suitable. As for I, do not worry. Do not look for me, I will not be found. Remember me fondly, but let me die with my family and my kingdom.
Clarisse Jacquette Ragonde D'Isques, Princess Royal of Pays Du Soleil
She folded the paper, leaving her signet ring beside it. She sighed, no longer would she use the name. Pays Du Soleil was no more. She could no longer try to keep it alive, to do would kill her. As much as she cared for Louis, she had to let herself be truly reborn. And so in her peasant clothes and a musket tucked away, Claudia D'Andre' slipped away, first to the island colonies, and then where ever she could go.
She had always wanted to see the world, she just wished it hadn't cost her a kingdom and all in it to do so.
